Classification of oil shales, coals and other organic-rich rocks
Abstract
Oil shales are a complex group of rocks which were deposited in a wide range of sedimentary environments and have a wide range of largely alginite-dominated maceral assemblages. A system of classifying oil shales and sapropelic coals is based on relative abundances of macerals. Classification of oil shales has applications to the commercial development of oil shale deposits and to the classification of petroleum source rocks.
