Behaviour of the Iron Line in Cygnus X-1 During Dips and Persistent Emission
Abstract
The Exosat GSPC observations of Cygnus X-1 have been analysed to study the behaviour of the iron line during dips and persistent emission. The energy of the emission line is approximately 6.3 keV for the persistent emission. The absolute intensity of the line and its equivalent width increase during dips. For one dip a broad emission line (FWHM ~ 2.6 keV) at 5.8 keV can be seen. This behaviour is discussed in terms of Comptonisation of the incident X-rays in relatively cold material, possibly associated with the stellar wind of the secondary.
