Nova MUSCAE 1991
Abstract

Shore, Computer Science Corporation, Goddard Space Flight Center; and N. Lund, Danish Space Research Institute, Lyngby, report: "We made low-resolution ultraviolet observations of Nova Mus 1991 with the IUE on Jan. 17.58 (Vilspa) and 18.21 UT (GSFC). The visual magnitudes as measured by the Fine Error Sensor onboard IUE were 13.18 and 13.22, respectively. The 120- to 320-nm spectra showed a hot continuum extending shortwards of Ly- alpha. The integrated 120- to 320-nm flux was 1.07 x 10E-10 erg cmE-2 sE-1. Emission lines identified (and net flux on Jan. 18.21 in units of 10E-13 erg cmE-2 sE-1) were C IV 155-nm (12), N V 125-nm (6.56), Mg II 280-nm (1.62), and O V 138-nm (2.34); no He II 164-nm was seen, to an upper limit of 0.947. The C IV feature had FWHM = 0.74 nm (1500 km/s). Evidence of faint, broad absorption features was present in the 160- to 180-nm range. The spectra on Jan. 17.58 gave measured continuum fluxes at 130 nm, 150 nm, and 310 nm of 14.0, 10.4, and 3.7 x 10E-14 erg cmE-2 sE-1 AE-1. No substantial changes in the ultraviolet fluxes were observed on Jan. 18.21. From the dust absorption feature around 22.0 nm, we derive a reddening E(B-V) = 0.20 +/- 0.05. The reddening-corrected ultraviolet energy distribution of Nova Mus 1991 is well described by a power law with index -2.30, similar to that reported by Makino (IAUC 5161) from Ginga observations."
