The re-examination of the weakly nonlinear theory of hydrodynamic stability
Abstract
Problems in the application of the weakly nonlinear theory of stability to hydrodynamics are briefly examined from a mathematical standpoint. Particular attention is given to the Landau-Stuart amplitude equation, the concept of resonance in weakly nonlinear theory, and mean-flow distortion in evolving free shear flows.
