Near-Infrared Long-Slit Spectroscopy of IRAS 14348-1447
Abstract
Near-infrared long-slit spectra have been obtained of a double- nucleus infrared luminous galaxy at z = 0.083, IRAS 14348-1447. The Paα and H_2_ emission lines are localized at the two nuclei with a spatial resolution of 1 kpc. The intrinsic widths of the narrow Paα components are measured to be 380 +/- 65 and 520 +/- 100 km s^-1^ respectively, at the primary and secondary. A broad Paα component (greater than 2500 km s^-1^) is present at the primary, and possibly also at the secondary. From the Paα profiles, we classify both nuclei as Seyferts with type 1.5-2. Ratios between the Paα and Brγ support the presence of broad emission components at both nuclei. The detection of a previously unknown emission feature at the rest wavelength 1.890 microns and the possible identification an allowed C II line are reported. The H_2_/Brγ ratios of the nuclei are similar to those observed in nearby seyferts. Lower bounds to the masses of hot H_2_ are estimated to be 3 x 10^4^ and 1.5 x 10^4^ M_sun_, respectively, at the primary and secondary. The rather small radial velocity difference of the two nuclei and optical morphology of the galaxy may indicate a near head-on collision of two spirals, viewed face-on.
