The strong absorption lines in the supernova 1987A spectrum during the first months after the explosion : variations of the Balmer lines.
Abstract
Variations of equivalent widths and radial velocities of the Balmer lines in the SN 1987A spectrum during the first months after the explosion are analyzed. It is shown that the gas density in the regions of line formation decreased in the time interval between the first and the second maxima of H-alpha and H-beta by an order of magnitude and that this may be the reason the second maximum was substantially lower than the first one. The anomalies in the velocities measured for H(alpha)-H(beta) are discussed, and the intervals of velocity constancy for these lines as well as for some Fe II and Ba II lines are found.
