The theory of decameter S-emission of Jupiter
Abstract
A novel mechanism is proposed for the generation of Jovian decametric S-emission based on the Cerenkov instability of an electron beam that is capable of arising inside the Io-Jupiter flux tube. It is shown that the proposed mechanism explains fairly well such experimental findings as the cone-like radiation pattern, the anomalous angle-frequency dependence, and the dynamic drift of S-bursts over a wide frequency range. Estimates made for Jupiter's intrinsic parameters demonstrate that the mechanism is able to provide the observed values of emission energy fluxes.
