Forbidden high-ionization lines in QSO spectra.
Abstract
We observed [Fe VII] or [Ne V] lines in a sample of QSOs with different luminosities. Compared to the lower-luminosity Seyfert nuclei the high ionization forbidden lines were found to be enhanced relative to the lower-ionization forbidden lines, but of similar strengths relative to the nuclear continuum emission. As in lower-luminosity AGN, the forbidden high-ionization lines tend to be blueshifted relative to and broader than the low-ionization NLR features. The widths of the forbidden high-ionization lines of AGN appear correlated with the widths of the permitted BLR components. The observations are consistent with the assumption that the forbidden high-ionization lines result from photoionized gas located between the NLR and the BLR.
