Point source polarization calibration of a phased array.
Abstract
The paper derives the analytical representation of the signals produced by a multiplying polarimeter for the polarized pointsource radiation received by a phased array of radio telescopes. The equations derived for the polarimeter signals are simplified by a series of assumptions which are designated as the 'single antenna approximation'. The simplified equations representing the polarimeter are used to derive expressions for the measured Stokes parameters. The vector of measured Stokes parameters is written as the product of an instrumental matrix and the vector of true Stokes parameters. The instrumental matrix is separated into timedependent and timeindependent matrices. The physical significance of all the elements in the timeindependent matrix is discussed. The single antenna approximation allows the polarization calibration scheme to be applied to single antenna observations.
