An alphaOmega dynamo with order and chaos
Abstract
A simple alphaOmega dynamo is presented, including alphaquenching by the magnetic field, modeled by a separate differential equation. The model is cast in spectral form. It is demonstrated that the type of solution, in particular the transition to chaotic behavior, critically depends on the number of Fourier components taken into account. Loworder systems tend to reach chaotic solutions already at moderate dynamo number, via subharmonic cascades. Highorder systems have limit cycles even at large magnitude of the dynamo number; their routes to chaos preferentially include two and threedimensional tori in phase space.
