High resolution spectroscopy of CO in the infrared spectra of cool stars.III. Line intensities, shifts and assymetries as probes of stellar turbulence and abundance in oxygen-rich giants.
Abstract
The CO spectrum in cool giant stars is studied in detail. It is found that CO lines show large differential shifts and asymmetries, indicating the presence of complicated velocity fields in stellar atmospheres. It is suggested that this finding implies that the notion of stellar turbulence is not necessarily valid.
