Microwave atmospheric sounding (water vapor and liquid water)
Abstract
The ATSR microwave radiometer will be flown on the ERS-1 satellite and will be devoted to the measurement of atmospheric water-vapor and liquid-water content. This paper introduces the general principle of microwave atmospheric sounding, with application to temperature and water-vapor profiling, and to measurement of integrated water content. Then the ATSR microwave radiometer algorithm is described and used to analyze the radiometer performance and the methods used to calibrate and validate the radiometer products.
