Launch vehicle propulsion optimization using response surface methodology
Abstract
This paper will describe the application of Response Surface Methodology in creating generalized trajectory equations for use in a vehicle design/sizing process and the evaluation of combinations of independent propulsion design variables in order to obtain a launch vehicle design that has been optimized for minimum dry weight or system cost. The process has been used to perform quick and accurate investigations on propellant and propulsion options for advanced SSTO and TSTO concepts.
