Reliable hoop strain measurements at failure on graphite composite
Abstract
The present study describes a method of measuring average circumferential strain up to failure that was developed to overcome the failure of strain gages caused by cracking of the resin matrix at high strains. The reasons why the foil strain gages failed, and the development, calibration, and installation of the circumferential wire strain gage are presented. The machine developed to install long winding gages properly has proven to be very reliable.
