A laser variant of the Ar-39/Ar-40 method and its new possibilities
Abstract
A laser variant of the Ar-39/Ar-40 isotope-dating method developed by Ivanenko and Karpenko (1987), in which a laser is used to destroy, in a stepwise fashion, a microregion of the analyzed sample, causing an escape of volatile materials, was used to analyze the stepwise escape of Ar-40 and Ar-39 from samples of muscovite, biotite, and microcline from the Chernaia Salma. A comparison with results of traditional method showed that, for standards with undisturbed isotope systems, the results of the laser method agree well with the traditional methods of Ar-39/Ar-40 isotope dating.
