Security of the remote control link of Anik E satellites
Abstract
The consequences of the loss of communication capability of a communications satellite in Canada would probably be catastrophic. It, thus, becomes important to protect the satellite system against any organization which is or could be hostile. A preliminary study has been initiated with the objective of determining the main threats to the Anik C and D satellites and to define the possible measures which could minimize their effects. It is concluded that the remote control links of the new generations of satellites must be protected against intrusion and jamming. Consequently, an agreement has been reached with Telesat Canada to encode the remote control links with the Anik E satellites and to transmit using a narrow beam directed only towards a restricted number of terrestrial control stations. Telesat will also engage in improving the security of its infrastructure and to ensure that the entire ground-based control and location system for the satellite will incorporate a sufficient degree of redundancy.
