Launcher payload carrying assemblies - Lightweight large composite structures meet multidisciplinary requirements
Abstract
Structural considerations in the design of payload carrier assemblies, especially as they apply to the Speltra structure of Ariane 5, are addressed. The Speltra structure is reviewed, and aspects of acoustic noise reduction for launcher payload compartments, and their amelioration, are discussed. Separation and jettisoning are briefly examined, and the results of structural analyses of Speltra are reviewed. Structural verification procedures are described. It is concluded that fiber composite structures fulfill the multidisciplinary requirements of payload-carrying assemblies for launchers.
