Design of a 200kA conductor for Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES)
Abstract
The paper reports the current status of the development program for a conductor for the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system. Special attention is given to the performance targets of the SMES conductor, the conductor design concept, the results of cabling trials, and the selected conductor configuration. The selected configuration of the 200-kA conductor that will be capable of operating at 1.8 K was shown to have a constant predictable cross section, the least potential for strand motion, and minimum deformation of the strands at the strand crossover location.
