A conserved current for perturbations of Einstein-Maxwell space-times
Abstract
Conservation laws for Einstein-Maxwell space-times (EMSTs) are investigated theoretically. The derivation of the symplectic 3-form and symplectic current for an arbitrary Lagrangian theory (Lee and Wald, 1990) is reviewed; an explicit general formula for the symplectic current in EMST is derived; a simplified formula for the component of this current normal to a nonnull hypersurface is obtained; and the symplectic current is evaluated in terms of axisymmetric polar harmonically time-dependent electrovac perturbations of axisymmetric static electrovac space-times. The conserved current described by Chandrasekhar and Ferrari (1990) is reproduced in the latter case, and it is inferred that this current can be generalized to arbitrary electrovac perturbations of arbitrary electrovac space-times, including the Kerr-Newman space-time.
