The Revolution in Ground-based Telescopes
Abstract
The technical aspects of constructing large ground-based telescopes are examined. A list of large telescopes currently under construction is presented. Consideration is given to holding the shape of a light mirror, the polishing large aspherical mirrors, optimizing optical configurations. The fabrication of the glass honeycomb mirror blanks at the Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory is described. The impact of the Hubble Space Telescope on astronomy and ground-based telescope development is noted.
