On the “macroscopic string” approximation in string theory
Abstract
We discuss an approximation in which the quantum string dynamics can be described by the sum of the usual string action coupled to “external” massless fields and the low energy effective action for the massless fields. We emphasize that the existence of such an approximation is a peculiarity of string theory and has no analog in particle theory. As a by-product, we explain how the “handle operator” formalism can be used to justify (in the d = 2 case) the bilocal ansatz assumed in wormhole approaches.
