a Search for Strange B Meson in UPSILON(5S) Decay
Abstract
We present measurements of the inclusive yields of strange and charmed hadrons in the decays of the Upsilon(5S) resonance in a search for the production of B_{s} meson based on a data sample of 116 pb^ {-1} of e^+e^- annihilation collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). Due to the presence of a valence strange quark in the B_{s} meson it is expected that the production rates for particles containing the strange quark, such as D _sp{s}{+},phi,K^ +/-, K^0 and K^{ *+} mesons or Lambda baryons is enhanced compared to their rates from the B _{u}(B^+) and B_{d}(B^0 ) mesons. Accordingly, the production of charmed mesons, D^0, D^+ or D ^{*+}, in the B_ {s} meson decays is expected to be suppressed. The production of the B_{s} meson at the Upsilon(5S) resonance, therefore, is expected to result in enhancements in the yields of strange particles as well as deficits in the yields of non-strange D mesons in comparison to those at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We extract an upper limit of 30% on the B_ {s} fraction in Upsilon (5S) decays using the measured D_sp {s}{+}.
