A Investigation of Double Pomeron Exchange in Proton-Antiproton Interactions at a CM Energy of 630 GEV
Abstract
The double pomeron trigger data taken in 1985 at sqrt{rm s} = 630 GeV with the UA1 detector has been investigated. The trigger required rapidity gaps on the energy deposition and an overview of various aspects of the data and comparisons to minimum bias data are presented. The charged particle multiplicity and its relationship to the mass M_{rm x} of central cluster mass has been studied in some detail. The multiplicity has been found to be higher and rise faster that pp and e^+e^ - experiments done at the sqrt{ rm s} corresponding to M_ {rm x}. The multiplicity distributions for five intervals of M_{rm x } covering 10 < M_ {rm x}<70 GeV/c^2 has been examined and a test of KNO scaling along with fits to the negative binomial distribution are presented and compared to other experiments. The implications of these parameterizations of DPE multiplicity distributions are discussed. The relative rates of production of K pi, and p in this data has been measured and compared to that of minimum bias data. The higher rate of K production in DPE as a possible indication of flavor -independence is compatible with the suggestion of pomerons being gluonic matter. The selection of 2-jet events for detailed study is described and the partonic x distribution for the pomeron is presented. The angular distribution of jet pairs is calculated and found to be similar to that of minimum bias data.
