The possibility of negative diffusion in a compressible turbulent medium
Abstract
An investigation is conducted of the diffusion of an admixed scalar field in a compressible medium with isotropic, homogenous, and stationary turbulence. The velocity field of turbulent motion u (r,t) is assumed to be known, while the reciprocal influence of the admixed field on u (r,t) is neglected. It is shown that the compressibility of the medium may give rise to negative values of the turbulent diffusivity. It is suggested that the negative-diffusion phenomenon can be used for to explain the speckled distribution of concentration, temperature, and magnetic field in various celestial bodies.
