Wolf-Rayet stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Abstract
Deep UK Schmidt Telescope objective prism plates of the LMC have been searched for Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. These plates should reveal WR stars up to 2 mag fainter than the faintest known unreddened WN star. No new WR stars were found: there is therefore no extensive population of WR stars in the LMC in the magnitude range m_v_ = 17-19. A separate exercise revealed a new, m_v_ ~15.6, WN3 star in the LMC, with a spectrum characterized by relatively weak emission lines.
