Generation of kinetic Alfvén waves in the solar wind transition region.
Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of penetrating streams of charged particles in the transition region of the solar wind at distances of 10-20 solar radii from the sun. It is shown that a Cerenkov instability of kinetic Alfven waves (KAWs) with an increment of 0.1/s can develop in this region. The energy of the excited turbulence of the KAWs is transferred to thermal protons via stimulated scattering. The temperature of solar-wind protons increases by 20 percent as a result of the dissipation of KAW turbulence.
