The Ulysses scientific payload.
Abstract
The Ulysses scientific payload is described and a layout of the instruments in launch condition is provided; it is noted that the combined weight of the payload is 55 kg. The spacecraft will carry nine hardware experiments designed for maximum performance in their field and to fulfil the primary mission of the craft, which is to explore the interplanetary medium away from the plane of the ecliptic and over the poles of the sun. Experiments described include the solar-wind plasma experiment, the magnetic-field experiment, the solar-wind ion-composition experiment, the energetic-particle and interstellar neutral-gas experiment, the low-energy charged-particle experiment, cosmic-ray and solar particle experiment, the radio and plasma-wave experiment, the solar-flare X-ray and cosmic gamma-ray burst experiment, and the cosmic-dust experiment. Two radio-science experiments, making use of the spacecraft and ground communication equipment, and a number of interdisciplinary investigations will also be conducted.
