A beam-plasma discharge stimulated by electrostatic mirrors
Abstract
Results of a laboratory study are reported in which a significant reduction of the ignition threshold of a beam-plasma discharge was observed in a system with electrostatic mirrors. It is shown, in particular, that, in addition to the effect of ion accumulation, secondary electrons oscillating in the electrostatic mirror region have a certain role in the stimulated ignition of a beam-plasma discharge. Applications of the results of the study to beam-plasma experiments in space are briefly discussed.
