VLA Imaging of Extragalactic Ammonia: Hot Gas in the Nucleus of IC 342
Abstract
Extragalactic NH_3_ is successfully imaged with 5" resolution using the VLA. Essentially all the single-dish flux is recovered in the interferometer maps. The hot gas (>~ 70 K), inferred from single-dish NH_3_ line intensity ratios, appears to be closely associated with the innernost portions of the nuclear bar seen in CO. Small-scale anticorrelation of the NH_3_ emission with the central thernal radio continuum emission is likely to be due to heating and photoionization effects.
