The Effect of Interlopers on the Mass Estimation in Systems of Galaxies
Abstract
The influence of unbound galaxies in the estimation of mass is tested in clusters of galaxies. Jacknife techniques have been used to assess the effect. It is shown that the virial and projected mass estimators are lowered by a factor of two at least when the samples are cleaned out for interlopers.
