Robust regression with Huber's weights in predictions of flare activity
Abstract
This work completes Bartkowiak and Jakimiec's (1990) paper. Predictions of flare activity are treated by use of linearregression functions. The parameters of these functions are usually estimated by the LSE method. It is known that estimates obtained by this method can be strongly influenced by atypical data vectors. More stable regression estimates are obtainable when applying the alphatrimmed regression method; another, more refined method; 'robust regression with Huber's weights,' yields more detailed information on the role and impact of data items in the estimated regression.
