SBS 0335-052: a blue compact dwarf galaxy with unique heavy element deficiency.
Abstract
Results are presented of spectral observations of the recently discovered blue compact dwarf galaxy, SBS 0335-052, which is known to have a record heavy-element deficiency. Oxygen abundance in this galaxy is 77 times lower than the solar abundance and 1.7 times lower than the abundance in I Zw 18. The electron temperature of gas was found to be very high (24,000 K). It is suggested that SBS 0335-052 is probably a young unevolved galaxy.
