The roles of cosmic rays in interstellar dynamics.
Abstract
The energy density of cosmic rays is comparable to the thermal and magnetic energy densities in the interstellar medium. Hence, they often affect interstellar dynamics significantly. Work on cosmic ray moderation of steady shocks and of supernova remnants is reviewed. The role that cosmic rays play at present in supporting diffuse gas in the Galactic halo and their effects on accretion flows in evolving galaxies are described. Cosmic ray driven and modified instabilities are considered.
