The Guide Star Catalog. I. Astronomical Foundations and Image Processing
Abstract
The Guide Star Catalog (GSC) has been constructed as support for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and contains about 19 million stars and objects in the sixth to fifteenth magnitude range. The GSC is primarily based on an all-sky single-epoch collection Schmidt plates. The GSC program is discussed in detail, including the HST program, the astronomical objectives of the program, and error analysis. An overview of the image data underlying the GSC and the GSC production software is given. The GSC image processing techniques are described, including the microdensitometers, the photometric data systems, the photographic response function for star calibration, object identification and parameterization procedures, the definitions of image features, and the object classification system.
