An improved method for membership determination of stellar clusters with proper motions with different accuracies.
Abstract
An improved method for membership determination of stellar clusters is theoretically developed. The method uses the cluster and field intrinsic proper motion dispersions as distribution parameters instead of the observed dispersions in the general case of observed stellar proper motions with different errors for stars in a cluster field. This avoids having to adopt a grouping solution with Sanders's method. Solutions and discussions of the distribution parameters and membership probabilities of the clusters M 11, NGC 2287, and M 71 demonstrate that the method is theoretically reasonable and feasible in practice.
