Photometry of early-type galaxies and the r1/4 law.
Abstract
An evaluation is made of photometric fitting laws for early-type galaxies generally and the r exp 1/4 formula developed by de Vaucouleurs in particular. The search for a 'best-fitting' formula for early-type galaxy profiles is noted to be persistently frustrated by the wide spectrum of behaviors exhibited by Es and S0/S bulges. It is therefore recommended that the search be couched in the more limited terms of a determination of the least number of independent parameters required for characterization of these myriad light-profile shapes with a single formula.
