Preliminary results from the quadrupole probe on NEED-1
Abstract
The sounding rocket NEED-1 (Nonmaxwellian Electron Energy Distributions) was launched in Nov. 1989. It was equipped with several plasma probes, particle counters and field probes. Possible wave-particle interactions between the ambient ionosphere and the auroral beams are studied. Launch criteria was determined by monitoring EISCAT measurements in real time. The results of the analysis of data from the quadrupole probe are presented. The emphasis is placed on empirical description of the measurements.
