The offshell closed strings as the topological open membranes: Dynamical transmutation of world sheet dimension
Abstract
Using the connection between (2+1) ChernSimons gauge theory and 2d Conformal Field Theory, the onshell string condition is obtained as a condition of the full independence of the interior of a (2+1) world. The new method for offshell continuation is considered based on the introduction of the Maxwell term in (2+1) theory. This leads to a dynamical transmutation of the worldsheet dimensions  the offshell string becomes a topological membrane (topological means that the (2+1) theory has a topological mass term). The dependence of the parameters of the (2+1) theory under external fields is discussed.
