The versatile elliptical gravitational lens.
Abstract
At the present time, about ten cases of gravitational lensing are known where either a distant quasar is multiply imaged or a background galaxy is imaged into an arc or a ring. Many of these cases have been modeled in detail, but no single model has been applied to all the cases. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that a simple elliptical lens can reproduce approximately the positions of the images and their magnifications/shapes in most of the observed cases. The authors are not attempting to compete with the more highly parametrized models, which do lead to better agreement with the observations, but they wish merely to point out that an uncomplicated generic model can reproduce the observations surprisingly well.
