Excitation of plane jet by twin-vane oscillator
Abstract
A plane turbulent jet was excited by a pair of oscillating vanes placed along the span of the nozzle near the exit. The oscillations generated large vortices which increased the entrainment of the main flow. Up to a Strouhal number of 0.25 there was amplification of the jet beyond which the spread of the jet decreased gradually reaching that of the steady case around a Strouhal number of 0.50. The jet which initially exhibited a flapping motion rolled up into vortices at a critical Strouhal number of 0.06.
