Aspects of the study of the upper atmosphere with reference to defense needs
Abstract
The current understanding of upper-atmospheric processes is examined in connection with defense needs. Particular consideration is given to aerodynamic problems connected with different phases of missile flight, the detection of strategic missiles, and the possible consequences of a nuclear explosion in the upper atmosphere. It is suggested that in all these cases detailed knowledge of the atmospheric structure and composition, as well as of the response of the atmosphere to natural and induced perturbations, is indispensable.
