Instability of the long-range resonating-valence-bond state in the mean-field approach

We show the instability of the mixed s- and d-wave or flux phase by showing that a continuous path connects it to a lower-energy dimerized phase without crossing any energy barriers. We discuss the consequences of this result for possible expansions around mean-field theory.
