a Study of D
Abstract
The hadroproduction characteristics of D _ s mesons in 800 GeV P-P interactions were studied. The experiment was performed at Fermilab (E743) using LEBC (LExam Bubble Chamber) as the vertex detector and the Fermilab MPS (Multi-Particle Spectrometer) as a downstream detector for the secondary particles. We report the following results: (1) One unique D_ s event was observed with the following characteristics: x_ f = -0.086, p_{bot } = 0.50 GeV, and decay time = 4.5 times 10^{-13} sec. (2) The most probable value and the 90% CL upper limit of sigma cdot Br (for all x _ f) are: (sigma cdot Br)_{most probable } = 0.52 mub, ( sigma cdot Br)_{90 %CL} < 2.7 mub, where BR is the branching ratio for Cabibbo favored three -pronged D_ s decays with no neutrals and sigma is the cross section for producing D_ s in 800 GeV pp interactions. (3) Assuming Br(D_ s --> phi pi) = 0.04, then the most probable value and the 90% CL upper limit of the cross section (for all x _ f) are: sigma_{most probable} = 7.4 mub, sigma_{90%CL} < 38 mub. (4) The measurements are in general consistent with the expectations.
