Observations of atoms in excitation levels close to the limit in the galaxy.
Abstract
The recombination radiolines C593-alpha and C747-beta have been detected at a frequency of 31.4 MHz in absorption towards Cas A. The C747-beta line corresponds to the highest observed atomic excitation level. The dimension of the Bohr orbits of the atom at this excitation level is about 0.06 mm, near the limit in the Galaxy.
