Hard X-ray emission from Markarian 348.
Abstract
The paper reports the detection by Ginga of hard X-ray emission from the optically selected Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mrk 348. The source has a 2-10-keV luminosity of 10 to the 43rd erg/s and an X-ray spectrum characterized by a power-law continuum of canonical slope with heavy absorption at low energies. These properties are very similar to those of many X-ray selected narrow emission line galaxies. The intrinsic X-ray luminosity of Seyfert 2 galaxies will have been seriously underestimated in previous studies if column densities greater than about 10 to the 23rd/sq cm are typical of this class of active galaxy.
