Interactions of a flexible structure with a fluid governed by the NavierStokes equations
Abstract
The linearized problem of small oscillations of a liquid in a container about an equilibrium configuration is addressed. In formulating the problem, it is shown how the linearized NavierStokes equations in variational form, together with a finite element discretization, can be written as a quadratic eigenvalue problem. A method based on a inverse iteration procedure is used to solve this eigenvalue problem. Eigenfrequencies are calculated for a number of representative cases. Flexible container walls are introduced and the effect of these walls on the eigenfrequencies is investigated.
