The effects of a cold ion parallel beam on electromagnetic waves with frequency near an ion gyrofrequency during plasmaspheric refilling
Abstract
It is shown that a cold ion parallel beam appearing during a plasma filling or refilling process in the magnetosphere may affect the generation and propagation properties of electromagnetic waves with frequencies close to the ion geofrequency. The most significant qualitative characteristics of the ion beam effects studied are: (1) in the k-parallel greater than 0 case, a cold parallel ion beam can lead to a drift resonant mode which is damped by energetic ions; (2) in the same case, a coupling between the drift resonant and the ion cyclotron modes leads to a HF mode and an LF mode; and (3) a right-hand nonresonant instability appears at k less than about 0, stimulated by the cold ion parallel beam.
