A transverse force acting on a spherical particle in a laminar boundary layer
Abstract
A spherical particle moving in an unbounded shear flow of a compressible fluid is subjected to a transverse force resulting from the consideration of the inertial terms in the equations of motion. The problem of determining the transverse force acting on a spherical particle as a function of the particle distance from the wall is solved using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The magnitude of the force is expressed in terms of a multiple integral, which is calculated numerically.
