Influence of design on performance of a satellite modem transmitting coded PSK signals
Abstract
A digital modem that transmits convolutionally encoded (CE) 8-PSK signals over a satellite link is considered. In the scheme, several different earth stations have simultaneous access, in an FDMA arrangement, to a given satellite transponder in the satellite. Computer-simulation results demonstrate that a transmission rate of 16/9 bits/s per hertz of bandwidth can be achieved, with a loss in tolerance to additive white Gaussian noise of less than 1/2 dB relative to the ideal undistorted CE 8-PSK system.
