The mechanisms of total content variations of atmospheric impurities due to internal gravity waves
Abstract
Two mechanisms of variations in the total content of atmospheric species caused by internal gravity waves are examined: deformation of the impurity layers by vertical motions and photochemical processes. It is found that the more important mechanism is deformation by vertical motions. The optimal conditions for the experimental detection of variations are defined. A method is presented for observing stratospheric internal gravity waves based on measurements of wave variations of the total content of atmospheric impurities.
